Meaning and contribution
Work that people find worthwhile and that contributes to others.
Our current focus
How can technological innovation make work better for the people who do it?
Good Work anchors SHIFT’s current research across all four streams. We examine how choices about technology, work design, learning, and governance affect the quality of working lives alongside organizational performance.
Our focus extends to human–technology work systems: the relationships among people, technologies, tasks, professional roles, and organizational arrangements.
Building on established research
Our agenda draws on the Institute for the Future of Work’s Good Work Charter and wider research on job quality and decent work. The areas below describe SHIFT’s research interests; they are not a reproduction of the Charter’s ten principles.
Work that people find worthwhile and that contributes to others.
Room to exercise expertise and make informed decisions.
Working conditions that support health and manageable demands.
Opportunities for people to shape changes affecting their work.
Access to learning as technologies, roles, and skills evolve.
Attention to who benefits from change and who bears its costs.
